An important large Sepik gable mask.
Fibers, pigments, 117 cm high. In the Middle Sepik and Blackwater region, the communal 'Tambaran' house' embodies the female ancestor whose enormous face appears on the gable and whose name is given to the house. Only initiated are to enter during ritual ceremonies. (VJ)
