An exceptional early central Baining mask, Papua New Guinea, New Britain, Gazelle Peninsula.
Early 20th century. Bamboo, barkcloth, pigments, 220 cm high. Made by the Baining, a people with no defined form of social or cultural structure, festivals, political hierarchy or religious authority, these exceptional large surreal masks are linked to forest spirits in the form of leaves, birds and fish. This would have been the central guiding mask, the focal point of the dance. (VJ)
