Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858)

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) - Arte Asiatica

Ueno Kiyomizudo Shinobazu no ike (The Kiyomizudo Hall and the Shinobazuno Pond in Ueno), nishiki-e, signed: Hiroshige ga, publisher's seal: Uo-Ei (Uo-ya Eikichi), censor’s seal aratame and date seal Tatsu-yo (4th month), in the year of the dragon 1856, cf. this sheet with no. 201-1436, Waseda Theatre Museum, Tokyo: the present sheet is probably a very early print. This hypothesis is also supported by the navy bokashi of the sky and the streaky ichimonji bokashi of the water near the shore with the clearly visible wood grain in the sky. The title cartouche is in rich white-pink, like in Waseda’s sheet. The pink of the cherry blossoms is intense yet airy. The numerous cherry trees next to Kiyomizudo Hall were famous for their early, abundant blossoming. To the left of it, the famous moon pine tree can be seen. Minimal staining to the margin outside the image area, traces of glue to the right margin on the reverse, attached to support, both right corners outside the image area damaged, 36.9 x 25.8 cm, mounted, (CT)
