Lotto No. 89

Hiroshige (1797-1858)

Hiroshige (1797-1858) - Arte Asiatica

Futawawa (Two Rivers), sheet 34 from the series: "Tokaido gojusan tsugi no uchi (Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido Road), subtitle (in a red cartouche, to the left of the title): Saruga-ba (Monkey Plateau), store sign (on the left in the image): meibutsi kashi wa mochi (rice balls in oak leaves), signature: Hiroshige ga, publisher's seal Hoeido, censor seal (in the outer left margin): kiwame. In Gordon Friese’s opinion, the present sheet made available to him as a photograph was printed from the original woodblocks. It is trimmed to the outer margin on the left and right, with loss of the kiwame seal. A longitudinal fold runs through the centrd of the sheet, as is often the case with sheets from this series. The missing perimetral line on the ridge to the left of the tall tree suggests that the present print is not an early one. The patterns of the women are also no longer clearly discernible. The application of bokashi is not very subtle. The colours are good. The sheet is still in good condition, with few traces of soiling and abrasions. The choice of colours in the different impressions of this motif has hardly changed during most of its printing history. Cf. fig. 72, in "Japan-Die fließende Welt. Aus der Sammlung Drennig", Vienna, 1991, Klaus-Albrecht Schröder, left and right margins trimmed, minimally stained, 24.3 x 35.2 cm, (CT)
