Hiroshige (1797-1858) Two Mandarin Ducks under Snow-Laden Bamboo in a Light Snowfall

Hiroshige (1797-1858) Two Mandarin Ducks under Snow-Laden Bamboo in a Light Snowfall - Arte Asiatica

nishiki-e, signed Hiroshige hitsu, artist’s seal: Ichiryusai, dated mid-1830s (see Hiroshige, Birds and Flowers, Israel Goldmann, New York 1988, plates 23 and 28), with haiku: “Oshidori no //sakazuki to chiyo//usukori” (“For mandarin ducks, thin ice is a wedding cup for one thousand years”). Plate 6 contains preliminary drawings by Hiroshige, the one on the bottom right shows marked references to it. On 15 June 1990, a print by Hiroshige “Mandarin Ducks Swimming beneath Snow-Laden Bamboo” was auctioned at Christie’s in New York (lot 133). A possible, though probably later version (snowflakes barely visible) of this kacho-e was auctioned at Bonhams & Butterfield on 16 November 2009 (lot 3550). The present sheet seems to be an earlier version, as the snowflakes are quite clearly visible, just like the wood grain in the grey winter sky. If the present sheet is trimmed along the border lines except for the left side, its size corresponds to that of plate 9 (see see aforementioned bibliography). Minimally stained, very good impression, 37.8 x 13.1 cm, (CT)
