Koblenz 1773-1859 Vienna, raised to the rank of Imperial Prince in 1803, Vienna, clear glass, curved body, gilt edging to interior and to exterior, border and medallion rim with gilt leaves on silver-yellow stained band, on quadrifoil the dedication "Frohsinn erheitere Deine Lebenstage", base with fine gold painted sprig of leaves wrapping a ribbon, cut repeated vertical facets on the side of the foot (“ranft”), 16-rayed star cut base, height 9.5 cm, Vienna c. 1815 (Ru)
Metternich-Winneburg, Klemens Wenzel Count, Prince (from 1813), Duke of Portella (from 1818), Austrian statesman, imperial envoy to Dresden 1801-1803, Berlin 1803-1806, ambassador to Paris 1806-1809, appointed Austrian minister of state 1809, as leading European statesman Metternich participated in the congresses of 1820-1822; in 1821 he was appointed house, court, and state chancellor. This Kothgasser glass was probably a gift from the parents Prince Metternich and his wife Princess Maria Eleonore Metternich Winneburg, née Countess Kaunitz-Rietberg (1775-1825) to their eldest daughter Princess Maria Leopoldine, later married Countess Esterházy (1797-1820) for her 18th birthday in 1815.
