“My sculptures are new objects in space, reflectors of light and instruments of movement. In their rhythmic structures movement becomes visible.”
Dieter Honisch, Mack-Skulpturen 1953-1986, Düsseldorf 1986, p. 44
The combination of light and movement is characteristic of Heinz Mack's sculptural works. Mack’s extensive and versatile oeuvre includes light stelae, reliefs, cubes, and rotors. The present work is titled “Lamellar Relief” in Dieter Honisch’s catalogue raisonné.
The material used for the relief, aluminium, was primarily used in the aerospace industry when the work was created in the 1970s. It reflects the light and mirrors the changing light conditions depending on the position of the sun and the weather conditions. The embossing of the surface turns the work into a relief.
The “Lamellar Relief” reflects light in induced refractions, with the shimmering, highly polis hed aluminium surface seemingly dissolving, whilst new structural elements continuously appear in front of the human eye. With his reliefs Heinz Mack invites us to step into a sphere beyond the rationally ascertainable, where reality is only visually perceptible.
