Gunter Damisch
Gunter Damisch, one of the most outstanding representatives of the "Neue Wilden" -movement in Austria since the 1980s, always understood his painting as an "evolutionary process" that develops out of "proliferation and growth" and where every "result cries out for a new one or generates something new". His painting can be understood as a pictorial cosmos of micro- and macro-worlds, in which impasto applied colour sculptures transform the canvas surfaces into dynamic spaces of movement. Gunter Damisch did not conceive the imaginative titles of his paintings as a concept, but rather as a "reaction to what happens in painting." WORLD always stands for painting that creates identity and meaning; FIELD reflects the painter's fundamental interest in landscapes, but also in the physical concept of the "energy field". FLOW, to which Damisch dedicated a series of works in 2001, finally refers to the philosophical idea of "panta rhei", to the idea that all being is a dynamic process.
