Carl Goebel - Casa Imperiale e oggetti d'epoca

(Vienna 1824-1899) “Tanger” [Tangier], old title on the reverse, inscribed “Speis Salon Nr. 25”, signed, dated C. Goebel 1889, oil on canvas, 49 x 50 cm, octagonal, framed (frame damaged), (Lu)

The imperial paddle steamer yacht SMS MIRAMAR during a voyage with Empress Elisabeth on board, off Tangier in November 1889. Empress Elisabeth had embarked at Miramar near Trieste on 4 November 1889, departing for Corfu. She stayed there until 21 November, during which time she received the German imperial couple, the king of Greece and the Danish royal couple. Afterwards, she visited Messina, Tunis and Malta, returning to Miramar Castle on 3 December 1889. The empress travelled more or less incognito. Therefore, the yacht does not carry a standard, but only the usual flags of a warship, which was designated with the abbreviation SMS (His Majesty's Ship). Cf.
