Lotto No. 212

“Avantgarde-Tragödie”, Udo Breitenbach

2021, object trouvé by the object artist Udo Breitenbach. Different materials, framed behind glass. Dimensions with frame height c. 72 cm, width c. 67 cm. (MHA)

“An original copy of the avant-garde magazine ‘Wendungen’ from 1921, featuring a famous cover design by El Lissitzky, was gnawed at by mice in my storage. In the present work, this tragic loss is interpreted self-ironically and the avant-garde incunable is framed together with the mouse” (Udo Breitenbach, 2021)

The Aschaffenburg-based object artist Udo Breitenbach works with unusual found objects and uses them in a new context. ‘Speaking objects’ from which he reads history and stories, and which he interprets. The results are Dadaesque collages, assemblages or ready-mades. Dadaists opposed the madness of the First World War with ‘the absurd’ - ANTI ART as a creative act of despair. Udo Breitenbach sees himself as a post-Dadaist, who resorts to the language of Dadaism, whilst also dealing with the issues of our time. The present object deals with the pandemic and its effects in a post-Dadaist manner. In view of the traumas and abysses of the present time, Breitenbach comments on topics such as Corona, populism, Europe or world politics. His works often bear ironic or sarcastic titles.
