Iran, c. 220 x 140 cm, 19th century. In the previous century, the small village manufactories around Bijar adopted not only charming arabesque compositions, but also some classical Safavid patterns from the reserve of the Central Persian knotting tradition. An example of this is the stepped medallion with archaic-looking attachments depicted in the present rug, which stands out against a fiery glowing field. This solid, heavy carpet of pure sheep wool is in good condition, with various traces of use and minor damage. (VP)
