Iran, c. 182 x 145 cm, 19th century. A mythological prayer rug with arboreal and animal motifs. The upper centre cartouche bears a date (1315). The border features numerous cartouches with Persian verses and auspices, Layla with camel trying to persuade Majnun to break his fast and return to the city from the desert. Manufactured on cotton warp with c. 360,000 knots/sqm, with minor traces of usage, in good condition. (VP)
