A Monumental Complete Sirigi mask
Dogon, Mali, wood, total length approx. 450 cm. Perhaps the one of largest masks ever used, this Sirigi mask, more than 4 metres in length, symboliszes the Ginna (the house of the extended family). Its elongated structure is a vertical juxtaposition of generations. Only the strongest adults, with great physical strength can manoeuvre this type of mask. Dancers jump and make rotating movements with the head forwards, backwards and sideways. The mask stays in position by means of a wooden bit that dancers hold between their teeth. (Huib Blom).
