A Fine 'Garamut' Slit Drum

A Fine 'Garamut' Slit Drum - Arte Tribale

Papua New Guinea, early 20th century, wood, 180 cm long. This slit drum is related, like other Papuan instruments, to ritual cycles and war dances, initiations and hunting. The drums have individual names and are believed to be so powerful that they can take on new shapes and roam about at the night. The carving of a Garamut is a sacred process, linked to the spirituality of the village. Once crafted, slit drums are used on several occasions, but like their construction, Garamut may only be played by initiated men. The symbolism on these drums has references to totemic spirits like the crocodile, couscous and ancestral figures, here seen as a male and female figure at the end of the drum.
