Anna De Weert

Anna De Weert - Dipinti dell’Ottocento

(Ghent 1867–1950)
Teatime, signed, dated A De Weert 1911, signed on the reverse and inscribed Anna De Weert Afsnee Mei 1911, oil on canvas, 55 x 50 cm, framed

Provenance:
European Private Collection.

Ana De Weert trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent and painted in the Belgian realist tradition. However, she met Emile Claus (1849-1924) in 1893 who converted her to Impressionism.
She was an active member of the Vie et Lumières Impressionist group associated with the Libre Esthétique alongside Emile Claus, Anna Boch, William Degouve de Nuncques and Georges Morren.
By 1896 she had settled in Afsnee along the Lys river in a country house called Hof ter Neuve. Thereafter most of her subject matter was taken from the Flemish countryside, where her atelier was surrounded by a garden full of flowers. Hof ter Neuve became a meeting place for many painters, poets and writers and was a source of inspiration for her work.
After the death of Emile Claus in 1924 she continued promoting the Belgian Luminist movement through exhibitions and lectures.
Painted in 1911, “Teatime” is a wonderful summer scene. Afsnee provided her with the perfect setting to experiment with the rendering of light and colour through paint.
