Caravaggio, Michelangelo Merisi, Italian painter, born in Caravaggio near Bergamo in about 1560-65, as son of the “Maestro di casa e architetto” of the Marchese di Caravaggio, in his youth he undergoes a 4-5 year apprenticeship in Milan, then probably stayed for a while in Venice and is mentioned in Rome at the age of about 20, between 1586 and 1587. The art dealer Valentin provided him with connections to esteemed art lovers and collectors, especially Cardinal Francesco Maria del Monte, who purchased some of his paintings including a "Lute Player" and introduced the painter to his home and environment. From that time onwards, its reputation increased constantly. The high nobility and princes of the church commissioned paintings for the decoration of churches and palaces. He painted religious and secular subjects. Thanks to his skill, he was also highly appreciated as an excellent painter of flowers and fruit. The counterpart, the painting "The Lute Player" featuring a male sitter, is preserved in the Pinacoteca in Turin;
