A “Mercury” Group for Empress Catherine II, Meissen c. 1960,
on original wooden base, porcelain, polychromed and gilt, Mercury with his attributes (the winged helmet and sandals and herald's staff) sitting on a money chest in a raven-drawn chariot on a cloud base, in front of him is a rooster, in the foreground a small genius with purse and a short sword, the facing side with curved and angular tiered base with gilt edges, pink bands and gold meander relief, flat back, height 31 cm, length 43 cm, small restored areas, underglaze blue crossed swords mark, gold painter no. 49, model no. 30, model by J. J. Kändler 1774 (Ru)
Mercury as the god of merchants and thieves, ravens were considered thieves, the rooster is supposed to wake people up. According to Homer's ‘Hymn to Mercury’, the latter accompanies mortal men in the dark night. The little genius represents a further allusion to the god of action by holding a purse in his right hand. The "Mercury" group was commissioned by Catherine II of Russia for the pavilion in Oranienbaum.
