Salzburg Master, active in the last quarter of the 15th Century
[Saleroom Notice]Madonna and Child; and
Saint Aegidius,
oil on panel, each 128.5 x 35 cm, framed, a pair (2)
Provenance:
Collection of Georg Schäfer (1896–1975), Schweinfurt, Germany;
Private collection, South Germany;
sale, Dorotheum, Vienna, 4 November 1992, lots 173 and 174;
Private collection, Vienna
Ernst Buchner wrote in his certificate (dated 17 April 1961): ‘These two marvellously preserved panels originally served as interior wings of a polyptych dated 1493 on its right wing. The two paintings are tranquil, sensitively conceived works by a Salzburg master to whom the two figures of saints in the pilgrimage church of St. Leonhard near Tamsweg are to be attributed and who stands out for his delicate and nuanced sense of colour’ (see Österreichische Kunsttopographie, Die Denkmäler des politischen Bezirks Tamsweg, Augsburg/Vienna 1929, figs. 294–95).
The Authorities for the Protection of the Cultural Heritage intend to induce a procedure for the cultural protection of Lot 5. Therefore an export out of Austria will presumably not be possible.
