Lotto No. 183

Follower of Jan Gossaert, called Mabuse

Follower of Jan Gossaert, called Mabuse - Dipinti antichi II

(Maubeuge circa 1478–1535)
Virgin and Child, with cherries on a ledge,
oil on panel, laid down on a wooden board, shaped top, 90 x 78.5 cm, framed

Provenance:
art market, Germany;
sale, Dorotheum, Vienna, 7 December 1988, lot 583;
Private collection, Vienna

The present panel illustrates the enduring popularity of Jan Gossaert’s many Virgin and Child compositions, most seeming to derive from his Madonna and Child Playing with the Veil which is conserved in the Mauritshuis, The Hague. An Italianate influence can be detected in these works, with Gossaert’s Antwerp mannerist contemporary Joos van Cleve also developing the Madonna of the Cherries motif originating with Leonardo and his pupil Giampetrino. Two contemporary copies of Gossart’s Virgin and Child works are known to have been executed by Pauwels Coecke van Aelst, Pieter Coecke van Aelst’s bastard half-brother.
