Anton Faistauer, who studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1906 to 1909 and founded the "Neukunstgruppe" with Egon Schiele, returned to Salzburg after the war, where he lived in the so-called Leitner Villa between 1920 and 1927. This former annexe of Mönchsberg Castle, demolished in 1930, offered him a wide panoramic view of the city, which is captured in this painting.
“Pictures have the task of opening up the mystery of nature to mankind. They should be able to appropriate the richness, the space, the depth and heaviness of the cosmos for mankind, to arbitrate the chaos and to open paths into the spirit of creation.“
Anton Faistauer
