The owl is the sacred bird of the mythological goddess Athena, the goddess of wisdom, strategy, battle, art, craftsmanship and manual labour. Athena is also the namesake and patron saint of the Greek capital Athens. Ancient Greek Athenian coins have shown the goddess Athena with the owl as her attribute from the end of the 6th century BC.
Markus Lüpertz's version of the Owl of Athena dates from 2015 and was created as an edition of 45 examples. Each piece was hand-painted by the artist and therefore has a unique character.
