In response to the quartz crisis in the Swiss watch industry, Patek Philippe launched the first Nautilus model in 1976 with the reference 3700. This series was produced until 1998, although production of the steel models had already come to and end in 1986/87. Due to its large case for the time, collectors used to call it "Jumbo". This nickname has persisted to this day. At its presentation, the Nautilus was promoted by the manufacturer as "possibly the most expensive steel watch on the market". This statement also applies to today's models on the secondary market.
