Michael Powolny, a Danube mermaid box ("Bonboniere, Donauweibchen und eiserner Mann, No 52"), model number K 250, designed in around 1907, executed by Wiener Keramik, by 1912
oval, straight-walled lidded box on four ball feet, with sculptural group of figures on the cover: naked "Danube mermaid" and kneeling "Iron man" in armour on stylised flowery meadows. The cover all-round inscription: "DONAUWEIBCHEN UND EISERNER MANN ZUR ERINNERUNG AN DIE KAISERSTADT WIEN"; light-bodied ceramic, with polychrome glazes, partly decorated in gold; partly scuffed, very slightly chipped, with irregularities to the glaze; the underside embossed with workshop signet and monogram; height 17.8 cm.
