Lotto No. 225

Venetian School, 18th Century

Venetian School, 18th Century - Dipinti antichi

Four scenes with the education of Pulcinella,
oil on canvas, each 72 x 94.5 cm, framed, a set of four (4)

Pulcinella is one of the best-known characters from the Commedia dell’Arte. Pulcinella’s attributes are his hooked nose, potbelly and hunchback. He is dressed in a white shirt and trousers, tied with a cord at the waist in place of a belt, typical of peasant clothing, and a tall conical hat called a tutulus.

From the eighteenth century onwards, Pulcinella became a symbol of the carnival period, especially in Venice, and the character inspired artists, including Giandomenico Tiepolo (see A. Gealt, Domenico Tiepolo. I disegni di Pulcinella, Milan 1986, pp. 13-14). Giandomenico executed an album during the 1790s called ‘Divertimento per li Regazzi’ which consisted of 104 drawings in pen and wash that depicted Pulcinella’s life.
