A side table, first quarter of the 20th century, - Design

four-legged structure, black lacquered wood frame construction, unattached stone top with fossil inclusions. Dimensions: height c. 72 cm, width c. 82 cm, depth c. 57 cm. (MHA)

This piece of furniture comes from a row house on Melchartgasse in Vienna’s 13th district. The house was part of the ‘Ostmark’ garden city settlement planned by the architects Heinrich Schmid and Hermann Aichinger in 1912/1913. Both architects have studied with Otto Wagner at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and, like many of their fellow students, diverged considerably from their mentor in their own designs. An identical table is part of the inventory of the Naturhistorisches Museum in Vienna.

Provenance:
Formerly part of the furnishings of Heidrich House on Melchartgasse in Vienna’s 13th district.
