A large bookcase, Vienna, first quarter of the 20th century, - Design

six-legged construction made of black limewashed oakwood, the front with five glazed doors, the interior fitted with shelves, flanked by column-like finials, the front with drawer and door, verso with label. Dimensions: height c. 179 cm, width c. 280 cm, depth c. 40 cm. Signs of age and use, scratches and abrasions, partly chipping, partly slight residues. (MHA)

This piece of furniture comes from a row house on Melchartgasse in Vienna’s 13th district. The house was part of the ‘Ostmark’ garden city settlement planned by the architects Heinrich Schmid and Hermann Aichinger in 1912/1913. Both architects have studied with Otto Wagner at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and, like many of their fellow students, diverged considerably from their mentor in their own designs.

Formerly part of the furnishings of Heidrich House on Melchartgasse in Vienna’s 13th district.
