Edward Theodor Compton
(London 1849–1921 Feldafing)
“Glacier de Grand Croux, Cogne”, verso titled on an old label, signed, dated E. T. Compton 1909, oil on canvas, 100 x 151 cm, small cracks, slightly damaged, framed (frame damaged)
Provenance:
Private Collection, Germany.
After the sweeping craze of the golden age of alpinism in the mid-19th century, in which scientists and adventurous sportsmen explored and ascended the major peaks in the Alps for the first time, artists also flocked to the mountains in search of extraordinary aesthetic experiences, thus opening up new painterly possibilities.
The English-born painter Edward Theodore Compton discovered his passion for the mountains at the age of only fifteen during a family holiday in Switzerland, and thereafter devoted himself to capturing their beauty. He became an experienced alpinist and embarked on several tours, accomplishing 300 major ascents, including no fewer than 27 first ascents.
Known for its natural beauty, its breathtaking high peaks, and imposing glaciers, Cogne is located in the Aosta Valley, a mountainous region in north-western Italy. Compton delivers a characteristically precise and realistic representation of the glacier, skilfully portraying the imposing atmosphere of the place.
