Marie Egner

Marie Egner - Dipinti dell’Ottocento

(Radkersburg 1850–1940 Maria Anzbach)
“Tirol, Alpenwiesen”, verso titled on an old label, remains of an exhibition label, signed M. Egner, oil on canvas, 59 x 81 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private Collection Germany, in the owner’s family for at least three generations.

Exhibited:
3. Ausstellung. 8 Künstlerinnen und ihre Gäste, Salon Pisko, Vienna, January 1904, no. 80;
Internationale Kunstausstellung, Düsseldorf, May - October 1904 (verso remains of the exhibition label).

Marie Egner was a founding member of the female artists’ association ‘Acht Künstlerinnen’ (Eight Female Artists). This association of painters, graphic artists and sculptors was founded in 1900, and organised regular exhibitions at the Kunstsalon Pisko between 1901 and 1912. They endeavoured to use their exhibitions to draw attention to the artistic productivity of women in Vienna. The present lot was exhibited at the Salon Pisko, in their third exhibition ‘8 Female Artists and their Guests’. Under the heading ‘Our Fatherland - Landscapes from Austria’s Crown Lands’ Marie Egner exhibited five works, including the present lot entitled ‘Tyrol: Alpine Meadows’. It shows a lushly flowering alpine meadow, an alpine hut and mountains stretching into the background. The artist chooses the direct rendering of the rich meadow flowers, including yarrow, devil’s claw, dandelion and gentian as her central pictorial motif. This painting clearly shows that she was skilled in ‘plein air’ painting, as the summer light is captured superbly. It invites the viewer to linger in an idyllic landscape. The motif seems to have been taken from everyday life and reflects the beauty of a summer alpine meadow.
