made by CONRAD GRAF, imperial & royal court fortepiano maker, Vienna, c. 1830/35, 6 1/2 octaves, walnut veneered softwood frame on baluster-shaped turned legs with 2 brass wheels (1 missing), long stringing, ivory keyboard, c. 89 x 245 x 127 cm, soundboard replaced in the course of a previous restoration, various veneer parts supplemented or missing, 1 brass wheel missing, no guarantee of tone, various signs of age and use. Conrad Graf (1782-1851) is considered the most important piano manufacturer of the Viennese Vormärz. At times, up to 40 employees worked in his factory. He became an Imperial & Royal Court Piano Manufacturer in 1824. In the course of his life he produced about 3,000 pianos, of which about 50-60 are believed to be preserved worldwide. His instruments were characterised by a well thought-out and solid construction, choice wood, solid craftsmanship and a full, round tone. In 1829, Chopin described the Graf pianos as the best in Vienna. Clara and Robert Schumann, as well as Johannes Brahms also owned Graf grand pianos.
