Jean Egger (1897–1934) is one of the most important Austrian painters of the interwar period. His work was known only to specialists until his first retrospective at the Österreichische Galerie in 1995, curated by the author.
Egger, as one of very few Austrians, found success and built his reputation in the then global capital of modern art, Paris, during his lifetime. Misunderstood and unknown in the Austrian art scene, he consolidated his reputation as one of the most gifted portraitists and landscape artists in the metropolis on the Seine between 1925 and 1932 at several salon exhibitions and a solo exhibition at the Galerie Sloden (1930). Egger spent the last years of his life on Mallorca with his partner Signe Wallin. Hardly any of his paintings reached the Austrian art market, and Egger slid into oblivion. ...

In June 1939, Otto Kallir-Nirenstein produced a retrospective of Jean Egger's work at his Galerie St. Etienne in Paris, which he had founded after his expulsion from Vienna.
