Emperor Francis Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth - a small covered tureen with support from the ‘coat of arms service’, silver, rectangular, margin with raised leaf décor, socket lid with hilt ring, all parts with engraved Austrian coat of arms with archducal crown, 25.5 x 21.5 cm, height 13.5 cm, weight 1137 g, master’s mark M & K = Stephan Mayerhofer & Klinkosch, old Viennese hallmark for 15 lot silver 1857, (Lu)
The Austrian ‘coat of arms service’ was commissioned by Archduchess Sophie for her private use. Unlike the other services of the imperial family, the individual elements of this service were not decorated with the archducal coat of arms, but with the Austrian shield. The service was made in 1831 by the Viennese Court goldsmith Stephan Mayerhofer and pieces were constantly added and replaced. After Archduchess Sophie’s death in 1872 the service was taken over by her son Emperor Francis Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth, for their private use. Various parts were therefore in use in the private imperial households and villas, especially in Ischl.
