A comparable painting by Gillis Mostaert (Hulst 1534 – after 1598 Antwerp) is in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, (inv. no. MNR 545).
The present painting bears two panel markings on the reverse. The clover leaf refers to the panel maker Michiel Claessens (1590-1637). The brand mark of the Guild of Saint Luke, Antwerp, two hands above a castle, was used from 1617 onwards and indicates the approval of the panel by the dean of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke.
