Two armchairs, second quarter of the 20th century, - Design

solid wooden frame on four legs with flaring armrests and openwork backrests. Dimensions of each element: height c. 72 cm, width c. 82 cm, depth c. 57 cm. Signs of age and use, scratches and abrasions, partly minor chipping, partly with faded/darkened areas, slight residues.

Both the form and a few stylistic elements of this design derive from Felix Augenfeld and Hugo Gorge. These pieces of furniture come from a row house on Melchartgasse in Vienna’s 13th district. The house was part of the ‘Ostmark’ garden city settlement planned by the architects Heinrich Schmid and Hermann Aichinger in 1912/1913. Both architects had studied with Otto Wagner at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and, like many of their fellow students, diverged considerably from their mentor in their own designs. Provenance:
Formerly part of the furnishings of Heidrich House on Melchartgasse in Vienna’s 13th district.
