An 18th-19th century Taiaha, Maori staff.
Wood, paua shell, 198 cm long. The Taiaha is one of the most iconic of all the Maori weapons and it was born when Tu, the god of war, sought out Rurutangiakau, the weapon maker of the gods, and asked her to fashion a weapon that is unmatched by any other. Thus, Rurutangiakau created Akerautangi, the father of Taiaha. These fighting staffs are very important in the Maori clan system and have many names like maipi, taiaha-a-kura, taieha, or pouhani. It is a double-handed weapon with on one side the rau or striking blade, and an upoko or head with arero or tongue extending out from the mouth in the Maori gesture of defiance on the other. (VJ)
