Lotto No. 174

Alois Hans Schram (Schramm)

(Vienna 1864-1919)
Design for a ceiling fresco, Allegory of Austria, signed AH Schram, oil on canvas, 200 x 77 cm, framed, (Rei)

The present lot probably represents an allegory of Austria:
Austria, dressed in white, gold and red, is enthroned in the centre of the picture with an open book in the clouds, whilst two putti carry a portrait of a ruler with a laurel wreath in the upper left corner. At Austria’s feet lies Peace with a beehive on its leg. Six figures representing prosperity, symbolizing the fruits of peace, are gathered below: Abundantia with a cornucopia, Harvest with a sheaf of ears, Fishing with a fishing rod, Bacchus and two other women with not clearly discernible attributes.
Below, an angel tosses coins to the figures gathered at the balustrade. Next to it, another angel holds a document in his hand, which can probably be interpreted as an allegory of the law. Both indicate to the ruler's duty to care for his people and provide for the welfare of his country.
