NASA (Mercury Redstone 4)
The first failure of the US space program: near tragic recovery of the second American in space Gus Grissom and sinking of the Liberty 7 capsule, 21 July 1961
Vintage gelatin silver print on fiber-based paper, rinted 1961, pnumbered "NASA S-61-2821" in black in top margin, with NASA HQ caption on verso, 20,3 x 25,4 cm
The Marine helicopter appears to have Liberty 7 in tow after Virgil Grissom’s successful flight of 305 miles down the Atlantic Missile Range. But minutes after “Gus” Grissom got out of the spacecraft it sank in 15,000 feet of water. The USS Randolph lies in the background waiting for the arrival of the astronaut.
The spacecraft was lost due to the premature activation of the explosively actuated side egress hatch. As a result, no photograph of the flight survived.
