Lotto No. 558

Richard Karlovitch Zommer

(Munich 1866–1939 Tiflis)
Samarkand, before the Sher-Dor-Madrasa, signed in Cyrillic script, oil on canvas, 45 x 67 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private Collection, Vienna.

We are grateful to Dr. Olga Sugrobova-Roth for her scholarly advice.

The city of Samarkand is renowned for its magnificent mosques and lies directly on the famed ancient Silk Road. It was officially under Russian rule from 1868, eventually becoming part of the Soviet Union. It has been part of the Republic of Uzbekistan since the dissolution of the USSR in 1991. The construction of the Islamic school Sher-Dor Madrasa on Registan Square - one of the most magnificent squares in Central Asia - was commissioned by Yalangtush Bakhodur, the ruler of Samarkand, in the 17th century. Sher-Dor literally means "provisioned with tigers" and refers to a huge mosaic high above the entrance depicting two tigers facing each other. This is not depicted on the present lot and the madrasa appears to be in poor condition. Some of the wall mosaics are no longer there and the façade appears almost dilapidated. The background is in noticeable contrast to the impressive clothing of the men who gather in front of the school. Zommer chose bright colours for the gathering, so that it only becomes apparent upon a second glance that the speech being delivered is clearly not being met with enthusiasm.
