Cesare Maggi *

(Rome 1881–1962 Turin)
Alta Montagna, signed, dated C. Maggi (1)908, oil on canvas, 51 x 71 cm, framed

Provenance:
Finarte, Milan, 1974, no. 190;
Private Collection, Italy.

Catalogued and illustrated in:
Giuseppe Luigi Marini, Cesare Maggi, Cuneo: Il Prisma ed. 1983, p. 26, 360, no. 3.

Cesare Maggi is one of the leading representatives of the second generation of Divisionist painters in Italy formed under the auspices of Alberto Grubicy’s gallery in Milan. Divisionism is based on the use of pure unmixed pigments in small areas so that intermediate colours are formed by optical illusion. Optical fusion could be introduced by placing small dots of paint alongside one another. Artists such as Maggi or Merello (see lot 584) developed the expressive and decorative possibilities of the technique in the early twentieth century. Maggi was greatly influenced by Giovanni Segantini, the leading figure of the first Italian Divisionist movement in the last decade of the 19th century.
He became, with the financial help of art dealer Alberto Grubicy, a highly successful painter. He took part in the major Italian and European exhibitions. The Venice Biennale devoted an entire room to his work in 1912.
This work was executed during a cold and snowy winter of the year 1908. Maggi depicts an unspoiled Alpine nature. The white tones of the snow are pure, and the light is lively and deep.

This work is being offered for sale from an offsite location and is not in Dorotheum, Vienna. The confirmation for the export permission is still pending.

This sale is subject to the condition subsequent of the completion of a lawful transport of the object into Austria.
