ENIGMA I, Enciphering Machine (CH.11a)
Berlin 1944, manufactured by Chiffriermaschinen Gesellschaft Heimsoeth und Rinke oH, nameplate with designation "A", serial number "18867", production code "jla" and year "44" (1944). Black lacquered metal case, reversing rotor B (same numbered A18867), ebonite plug board with 10 cables, QWERTZ keyboard layout, lightbulb field with “Kabelprüfung/Lampenprüfung" (cable check/lamp check), on the lid inside label "Nur Glühlampen mit 12 mm / Durchmesser verwenden" (Only use lightbulbs with 12 mm / diameter), the oak case with metal handle and metal plate with same numbered "A 18867", with description in the lid "Zur Beachtung..." (For your attention...) and two spare cables, front flap with "Klappe / schließen" (close / flap) stamp, 1 original battery Tanax box battery No. 660. Size: the case when closed c. 28 x 34 x 15.5 cm. (The three rotors are missing, minor damage)
Provenance:
Abandoned at the end of April 1945 by fleeing German soldiers who had previously been housed in the Krone Inn in Riefensberg (Vorarlberg). According to eyewitnesses, the machine was rendered unusable by removing the rotors beforehand. The innkeeper Peter Dorn (1892-1973) secured the Enigma, which has remained in his family until today. Peter Dorn was in the Resistance and smuggled agents across the Swiss border into Germany.
