Lotto No. 1089

A Large Lidded Tureen with Chrysanthemums and Bird Decoration, Meissen c. 1730,

hemispheric body extended to the lip, lid with pine cone or artichoke as a handle, the body and lid featuring a variation of "bird tree decor", the body with large chrysanthemum flowers, on both sides flower branches with a perched bird, this motif is repeated twice on the lid, porcelain, polychromed and gilt, height 25 cm and diameter 29.5 cm, underglaze blue Mercury staff mark, minor firing crack, one firing crack to the rim of the tureen covered with a flower at the time of production, (GO)

Literature:
Eikelmann, Renate (ed.): Meißner Porzellane mit Dekoren nach osasiatischen Vorbildern, Munich 2013, vol. II, cat. nos. 181-201 and 355-377.

This bird tree decor goes back to Chinese "famille verte" porcelains, which was copied in Meissen in three variants. The models can be found exactly in three Chinese bowls, which are still in the porcelain collection of the SKD Inv. No. PO 3038-PO 3040 and originally intended for the ‘Japanische Palais’. On this tureen, however, the basic composition of the bird tree decor is broken up and large multicoloured chrysanthemums are preferred as the main motif to the birds, as found on the Japanese Kakiemon decor with "rock and chrysanthemum decor". This again indicates a point of mediation through the Kakiemon porcelain and is an exemplary illustration of how a motif is mediated from China through Japan and finally to Saxony, where it is creatively combined.
