Lotto No. 1091

A Amorous Couple with a Birdcage, Meissen c. 1736/1737,

model by Johann Joachim Kaendler, the lady nestling close to the seated gentleman who grasps the knob of the bird cage with his left hand, porcelain, polychromed and gilt, height 12.6 cm, width 15 cm, partly glazed bottom, underglaze blue crossed swords mark, the bottom with firing cracks, the lady’s hair and sleeve bow, 1 thumb of the cavalier, cage knob, flowers and leaves very slightly chipped, (Hr)

Kaendler describes the group in his work report of December 1736: "Eine Croppe, welche von zweyen Figuren bestehet, aufs Warenlager verfertiget, wie ein wohl angekleideter junger Mensch auf einem grünen Raßen sitzet und ein mit einer adriene gebutztes frauenzimmer umbarmet, Darneben ist auch ein kleiner Vogelgebauer befindlich, worinnen Vögelein sietzen(...)". Kaendler used an engraving from William Hogarth's series "Tom Rakewell wastes his money" (A Rake's Progress) from 1735 as a graphic model, in which the decadent lifestyle of a rich heir leads to his social decline, which lands him in prison and ultimately in an asylum. The design with free-standing feet may have been problematic, as with other groups of the time, and this detail was changed a short time later. The detail formations, base form and painting style allow a more precise dating of the groups of this period (Wallwitz 2006, p. 199, p. 203).
