Allegory of “The Roman Empire” of the series of the “Four Monarchies”, Meissen 1760/70,
a general in antique armour with heraldic double eagle and cloak on a round meadow base with rocailles, at his feet a horned monster, porcelain, polychromed and gilt, height 20 cm, the back of the base with underglaze blue crossed swords mark, firing crack to the cloak and underneath it, laurel wreath chipped, the face of the general and the horns of the accompanying animal have been restored, (GO)
This figure with all the attributes of a Roman emperor is supposed to represent Julius Caesar. The series of figures, based on designs by Johann Joachim Kaendler, was created between 1753 and 1763 and depicts the four great empires or monarchies of antiquity in allegorical figures: Assyria, Persia, Greece, and Rome.
