Kesi, China, c. 154 x 55 cm,
early 20th century. An exquisite silk tapestry with gold thread. Textiles such as the present one are described in English with the expression “woven like hair”. This museum-quality textile backrest of a stately hardwood chair depicts the four-clawed mang dragon with the flaming pearl for rain and fertility in well preserved colour quality. The upper section features a phoenix that has been reversed to face backwards. The seat is decorated by a lotus flower medallion. The lower end, featuring seahorses over mountain and wave motifs, would hang down from the chair pad. Mounted on a frame and excellently preserved. (VP)
