Among contemporary artists, Vasarely has probably contributed the most to the search for the infinite possibilities of a visual structure in which the eye endlessly overturns its perceptions of reality.
His work (expressed, in his words, in form-colour) involves the rational and fantastic element of a nature mise en fonction by man and is the constant counterpoint to this never-loosening tension.

Italo Mussa, (ed), Victor Vasarely, Sansoni Editore, Florence, 1980, foreword
