From the 1960s onwards, Claus Otto Paeffgen, a lawyer by training, established his reputation with his partly critical, partly ironical and witty, sometimes pop and occasionally poetic ‘Umwickelungen’ (wrappings) and ‘Umrandungen’ (borderings), which he used to highlight the banality of mass culture. The ‘Umrandungen’, which include the present work, were created by thickly outlining photographs and newspaper clippings that the artist subsequently projected onto canvas.
