Laske's rich oeuvre revolved around the reproduction of crowd scenes, which were almost a guiding theme. He drew from real life as well as from world literature, popular fairy tales, the Bible or mythological traditions. He once wrote that he painted markets, people and gatherings not just for the interesting colour effect, but because he made it his business to depict movement.
This world theatre, which Laske often transferred to the realm of animals, drew on a grandiose interweaving that united a precise gift for observation, overflowing imagination and painterly freedom. Where these strands intersected, images, episodes and anecdotes flew to Laske as if of their own accord. The artist saw himself "as a composer of self-imagined and also biblical themes" and rightly referred to the "bizarre, grotesque, often humorous details" he narrated.
