Lotto No. 13

Adolphe Joseph Thomas Monticelli

(Marseille 1824–1886)
Scene from Faust, signed A Monticelli, oil on panel, 30 x 50 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private Collection, Vienna

Adolphe Joseph Thomas Monticelli was a student of Rey and August Raymond Aubert 1847/49 in Paris, where he later made friends with Narcisso Diaz. He was well on the way to becoming a European celebrity, when in 1870 the threatening siege of Paris caused him to return to Marseille, where he had to work in meager conditions and stayed rather unnoticed. Initially exact in his drawings, he soon changed his classicist styling for a highly refined painting style, focused on color harmonies and largely dissolving the contour and mosaic-like sparkling palette. His best time was between 1865 and 1875. He exercised a strong influence on Van Gogh and the Scottisch school.
