silver, parcel-gilt, of round form, the body with openwork coating, repoussé acanthus leaf and fruit decoration, laurel bands, hinged cover with ball finial, handle, height 20 cm, weight 1225 g, master’s mark SK = Stephanus Klein (mentioned in 1708 in Rosenau), further master’s mark IB = Johannes Bonta, city mark Groß-Steffelsdorf (Rimaszombat), c. 1690/1700, (Lu)
A magnificent tankard in excellent condition. This tankard is a work by master silversmith Stephanus Klein from Rosenau. As there was no guild in Rosenau, this tankard was taken to neighbouring Gross-Steffelsdorf for testing and approval by the local silversmith Johannes Bonta. Rosenau did not have its own guild until 1708, so the masters there had to rely on the then more important guild in Gross-Steffelsdorf to test their pieces.
