Lotto No. 164

Jakob Matthias Schmutzer Circle

(1733-1811)
Head study of a young woman in a hat and with a necklace, looking downwards, red chalk on laid paper, 57,5 x 40,5 cm, inscribed "C. n. 3." in pen and brown ink in the upper left corner, fixed to support, mounted, unframed, (Sch)

Provenance:
Collection Franz Xaver Pieler (Vienna 1876-1952 Klosterneuburg);
His heirs, Private collection Austria

The motif of the present drawing is comparable with two portrait studies in the Kupferstichkabinett of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna (Inv. HZ_12.162 and HZ_12.200), which may represent the same model. Execution and chalk stroke can be found in secured drawings by Schmutzer; the modeling with cross-hatchings, the vigorous strokes in the hair and the accordance in the stroke of the curl of hair which is falling over the shoulder onto the chest are comparable with known studies by the artist. The lack of the signature and the fact, that sheets like this were often copied by pupils may suggest that the present sheet is only a copy by a pupil or an artist from Schmutzer’s circle.

We are grateful to MMag. René Schober, Kupferstichkabinett, Akademie der Bildenden Künste Vienna, for the scientific support.
