A prototype of the “Chess Court Table”, designed by Daniel Weil,


for Eins zu Eins, Germany, four-legged solid oakwood structure. The chess table features chessboard made of maple and walnut wood. With the official World Chess Championship set - the only FIDE-approved chess set for the World Chess Championship, also designed by Daniel Weil. Incl. a bespoke removable small tray to hold a small chess clock or mobile phone. The tray is made polished stainless steel with a leather top. Two drawers with removable inlays to accommodate the chess pieces, a chess clock and the bespoke clock tray. Dimensions: height c. 75 cm, width c. 59 cm - 109 cm, depth c. 57.5 cm - 80 cm. Slight signs of age and use. (MHA)

Daniel Weil was born in Buenos Aires in 1953. An architect, industrial designer and former professor of industrial design at the Royal College of Art, over the last four decades he has developed products, interiors, packaging and designs for a wide range of clients including Swatch, Lego, Krug, Superga, Benetton, Aldo, United Airlines, One & Only Resorts, the Savoy Hotel and the Dorchester in London. In 2013 Daniel Weil designed and directed the World Chess Candidates Tournament, which was won by the current World Champion Magnus Carlsen. He then designed the official chess game of the World Chess Organization (FIDE), which was used in the last two games in Mumbai and Sochi between Carlsen and Anand. Many of his works are preserved in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, among others. With the 2014 exhibition ‘Time Machines: Daniel Weil and Art of Design’, the Design Museum celebrated Weil’s career to date. «Chess is a sport and a game of thrones» (Daniel Weil) «All artists are not chess players – all chess players are artists.» (Marcel Duchamp)
